The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song composed by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
