Meteorologists are saying an icy commencement to the new year, with snowfall likely across much of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Plans Continue Amid Forecasts
Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay festivities are set to proceed, following last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid advisories for snow across northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," noted the national forecaster.

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and good visibility. Readings are forecast to be cold, meaning extra layers essential, as per forecasters.
Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

As we enter Friday, snow alerts have been issued across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
