The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part season created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that attracted over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but official word only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to tackle corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the background, plot details suggested.

In a statement, the creator commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful television series of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of season six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the network announced on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
