Democrats Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment

Democratic officials demonstrated fury after Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and declared they should be arrested and penalized "through capital punishment" following their posting of a contentious video.

The Message That Triggered the Controversy

The video footage, shared on Tuesday, features six Democratic congress members who previously worked in defense or security positions.

"As we did, you all made an oath to protect and defend this national charter," the representatives affirmed in the 90-second video. "At present, the dangers to our democratic foundation don't only come from abroad, but from within our own country. Our regulations are clear, you can decline illegal orders, you can reject illegal orders, you should decline improper directives. No one has to follow commands that violate the statutes or our founding principles."

The Former President's Incensed Response

The video message seemed to prompt a heated response from the previous commander-in-chief.

On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional publication, he declared: "This represents really concerning, and Harmful to our Nation. Their comments cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Representatives Respond

Following Trump's comments on that day, Democratic leadership released a joint announcement condemning the comments.

"Political violence has no place in America," they stated. "Elected officials who participated in the video all served our country with tremendous loyalty and honor. We clearly censure Donald Trump's appalling and harmful calls for execution against members of Congress, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."

The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in touch with security officials "to make certain the safety of these representatives and their families."

"Donald Trump must without delay take down these unhinged online messages and withdraw his dangerous language before he gets someone killed," the declaration added.

Representatives' Defiant Response

The officials who were featured in the video also published a statement.

"We serve as former service members and national security professionals who value this nation and took an oath to defend and uphold the constitution of the United States," they said. "This commitment continues forever, and we intend to keep it. No intimidation, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that fundamental duty."

"The significant point is that the president views it liable to punishment by death for us to repeat the legal requirements," they continued. "Military personnel should understand that we have their support as they fulfill their pledge to the founding principles and responsibility to follow only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."

They added: "The entire nation must come together and censure the ex-president's demands for our death and partisan aggression. This is a moment for principled stance."

Further Governmental Comments

The Opposition leader also censured Trump's remarks and published on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is demanding the execution of public representatives."

He stated: "This represents an outright THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, the entire nation – regardless of party – should denounce this right away and absolutely."

The Republican House speaker supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", labeling the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This represents very risky, you have leading members of the legislature telling troops to defy commands, I think that's without precedent in US history."

The Republican leader also reportedly stated to media outlets that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "defining the offense of sedition" but that "attorneys have to examine the wording and decide all that."

Executive Branch Response

During a White House press conference on that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Would the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary answered: "No."

"It's important to note about what the former president is addressing," the spokesperson declared. "We see sitting members of the American legislature who conspired to arrange a recorded statement to members of the national defense, to serving soldiers urging them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."

She said: "The sanctity of our defense system depends on the chain of command, and if that system is broken, it can lead to casualties, it can lead to confusion, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are basically encouraging."
