An intense cold spell has seized an intense and prolonged cold spell, with temperatures hovering in the minus 20 to minus 40 Celsius range for multiple weeks. This week, the Yukon community of Braeburn saw the mercury drop to -55.7C, its coldest December temperature in half a century.
Enduring Chill in the Deep Minus Forties
Similarly, the communities of Mayo and Dawson experienced 16 consecutive nights below -40C, with the temperature in Mayo bottoming out at -50.4 degrees Celsius earlier this week. Whitehorse similarly reported ten separate nights when the cold dipped under -30 Celsius.
The deep freeze spread farther south through Christmas week. In Edmonton, the Christmas overnight low dipped under -28 degrees Celsius.
The day after Christmas was forecast to deliver lows of at least -20C across many regions, encompassing cities from Edmonton to Quebec.
Forecast to Persist Through Early January
The severe cold is forecast to persist for the foreseeable future. There are warnings of possible electrical grid strain in Yukon territory in the coming days, as the system endures record-high pressure from record-high energy demand.
The prolonged chill has been caused by the Arctic vortex settling across the northern part of the continent this month, allowing bitter Arctic air to spill south. The frigid dome is projected to gradually withdraw north gradually, enabling milder Pacific air to move across the US and into parts of southern Canada.
Stark Contrast with US Warmth
Conversely, sections of America recorded their warmest Christmas Day on record as readings skyrocketed 15 to 30 degrees Celsius above normal. Across wide regions, the atmosphere was more akin to late spring than late December.
A number of states broke historical records for December 25th warmth. The capital of Oklahoma soared to 25C on Christmas Day, surpassing the previous peak of 22C set in 1982. Urban centers like Austin, Dallas, and Charlotte, North Carolina similarly saw thermometers rise past the 25C mark.
Heat-Dome Effect Drives the Heat
Above-average warmth is expected to continue for the remainder of the week and beyond, with abnormal warmth projected to move into the south-eastern states later in the week.
The unseasonable temperatures are powered by a strong upper-level ridge stretching from the southwestern deserts northward and eastward, creating a heat-dome effect. This setup creates an extensive zone of high atmospheric pressure blanketing a significant part of the landmass, which holds warm air close to the ground. Descending air compresses and adiabatically warms, fostering the buildup of exceptional warmth.
