Condemnation Explodes as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Draws Widespread Criticism

Personalities from both sides of the political spectrum and the entertainment world are coming together to condemn former President Donald Trump for his remarks in the wake of the tragic passing of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Controversial Social Media Post

After the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted on his platform to label the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". The message, he claimed Reiner's death was "due to the hostility he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".

Police Developments and Arrest

Authorities have since confirmed the arrest of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the incident. Reports indicate his bail was set at a substantial amount.

A Wave of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians

The response to Trump's words was immediate and scathing.

This is a disgusting and vile statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, similarly condemned the remarks. Goldberg referenced prior rhetoric from Trump about political violence, asking, "Have you no decency? Can you get any lower?"

California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "This is a sick man."

Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a despicable piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just lost it. Now saying the Reiners caused their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."

Criticism from His Own Party

A number of GOP lawmakers also expressed dismay.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". She also alluded to struggles with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.

Fellow GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disgraceful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly dared others in his political party to defend the comments.

Reiner's Legacy and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.

"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democratic systems collapse around the world."

Regardless of his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally after the killing of a different individual.

A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal

Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously recounted the story of the session, noting Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
